Installation procedure
Download slax6rc6.tar
Download the package slaxGIS-070730.tar
In the following order:
1. Unpack slax6rc6.tar to the root of your USB flash drive
2. Unpack slaxGIS-070730.tar to the root of your USB flash drive
If you are asked to overwrite files choose yes
As a result you should get a directory tree as the one depicted in the image.
Now you have to make your USB flash drive bootable, hence, from the /boot directory on it, execute:
- bootinst.sh if you're working in Linux
- bootinst.bat if you're working in Windows
It could be necessary to modify the BIOS on your machine in order to make it seek the operating system on the USB drive on boot (depending on the BIOS, you will have to choose USB-HDD, USB-ZIP, etc).
Reboot your machine with the USB flash drive connected.

Notes
If the autoconfigured graphics settings ('Graphics mode' in the boot menu) lead only to a blank screen, try with the 'Graphics VESA mode' menu entry.
The changes you make during the use of the operating system are saved by default in a 256 MB file (slaxsave.dat) located in the /slax directory. You can increase the available space by pressing 'TAB' at the boot menu and modifying the 'chexpand=256' boot option increasing it to the value you need (taking into account the available space on your USB flash drive). Next reboots will automatically use the value you set.
Tests were performed in which the distribution was installed on a 4 GB USB stick, creating a 3 GB slaxsave.dat file. Put through significant stresses with regards to computation and memory/disk usage, it has provided results that could be compared to a normal desktop system in terms of stability and efficiency.
