The Web C.A.R.T.E. Project (Web Catalogo e Archivio delle Rappresentazioni del Territorio e delle sue Evoluzioni, Web Catalog and Archive of the Territory and its Evolutions Representations) was developed in accordance with the State Archive of Como and the support of the Fondazione Provinciale della Comunità Comasca Onlus. The project goal was to exploit the potential of the latest free and open source Internet GIS tools to exploit the valuable historical heritage which is currently preserved at the State Archive of Como. This is composed of cadastral maps belonging to different historical cadastral series, which have been properly digitized and georeferenced, can be navigated and compared. The system provides also an Italian standards-compliant web geocatalog of metadata supplying documentation for the single maps.
In the WebGIS it is possible to display the different map series made available by the State Archive of Como, superimposed on the current orthophoto of the city, served as a Web Map Service (WMS) by the National Cartographic Portal. City buildings are thematized according to the construction period and they are represented as extruded geometries on the virtual globe. Thanks to graphical interfaces, it is possible to dynamically display buildings according to different criteria, such as a user defined construction time period or to display only buildings already built up in the year selected.

It's a project born within the course of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the Master of Science in IAT (Environmental and Geomatic Engineering) of Politenico di Milano (Como Campus), Academic Year 2008-2009. The aim of the project is the realization of a webGIS that can collect all the available information about the city of Como in the XVIII century
The webGIS presented here are the result of some of the projects realized by the students of the GIS course (2007/08). Students have exploited the knowledge they gained during the course in order to produce webGIS examples that could be used to assist decision making for risk mitigation and disaster relief operations in a region of Bolivia
